Report on the year 2002-03

by Andrew Fraser
(reprinted from The Inverleith News, Autumn 2003)

We have had a busy year.

Last year's AGM in the Botanic Garden Lecture Theatre in November 2002 was followed by Dr David Rae's spellbinding talk on his botanical and other African adventures from the Kalahari Plains to the Skeleton Coast.   A tour de force.

During November a couple of groups of members were taken on guided tours of the former St Colm's Christian Scientist Church   in Inverleith Terrace, which has been sensitively adapted as the premises of Union advertising agency.   We are grateful to Simon Scott for arranging the tours, and much appreciate the practical and design help that he has since given the Society. We hope that you appreciate the transformation of Inverleith News under his guidance.

In June we had a very pleasant Social Evening at 34 Inverleith Terrace, by kind invitation of our member Bryan Wade.   Starting with drinks and nibbles on a sunny lawn, and gravitating inside as the evening progressed, Bryan's hospitality was very much appreciated by all who were there.   Plans are already in hand in for the next occasion, an indoor gathering on Friday 6th February.

Committee meetings are held every couple of months or so, when planning issues and social projects are discussed.   Planning applications within the Inverleith Society area are monitored weekly by a sub-group with expertise in planning legislation, so that comments can be made promptly within a tight timescale. The Committee also reviews the City's various proposals for parking and traffic arrangements and comments as appropriate (see separate report). We have good liaison with our local Councillors and MSPs, who keep us informed and make sure our views are heard in the Council.   The latest area of concern is the proposed extension of wheelie bins and large static containers for household rubbish, and we are monitoring carefully.

We are slowly moving into the electronic age, with Committee members now linked by email, planning applications dealt with over the net, and even a scheme to develop an Inverleith Society website this winter.
